When I first spoke with Scot Markwell, US Distributor of Furutech products, at Elite Audio Video Distribution in LA, and a longtime colleague of, and setup man for, the late Harry Pearson, about the opportunity to review a full loom of Furutech flagship cables and passive power devices, I admit to being more than a little interested.
I consider it a privilege to be selected to review the top-of-the-line Flux Series cables by the Japanese high-end
manufacture Furutech. There are at least three groups of people that might find that statement a bit odd. First,
Cables are often considered an accessory rather than a critical part of the system as a whole – and it’s a short-sighted approach. That’s why a cable loom like the Furutech Flux system assembled here warrants attention: it’s a fundamental part of the end result. And while the prices are high, they are not as high as some and certainly not unusual in high-end cable circles. Furutech is a Japanese company that established itself in the UK with the most comprehensively engineered IEC mains plugs on the market, but it started out making AV cables with high purity OCC single-crystal oxygen-free copper, a material which it still considers to be the ultimate for audio applications. Although the Flux is Furutech’s flagship range and consists of all the key signal and AC cables, the range of off-the-shelf lengths is limited to 1.2m for Lineflux interconnects and 1.8m for Powerflux mains cables, but Speakerflux can be had in 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m pairs with prices starting at £2,295 for the shortest. Other sizes can be made to order.
FURUTECH ALPHA PS-950 £1,495 Quite possibly the most expensive power lead we have ever reviewed in Hi-Fi World magazine, the Furutech is the sort of product that has one asking questions about the meaning of life, universe and everything. After all, it is more expensive than many families’ cars and could likely sustain an entire village in a famine-hit part of Africa for a month. When you’ve parked the ethical issues, and taken the product on its own terms, it doesn’t seem quite so objectionable.

I have been a fan of Furutech wires for the better part of a year. My experience with the Furutech Evolution II series of
wires (see my PFO review on issue 45) concluded that the series is an ideal rock-solid performer on which to build the
connectivity foundation of a substantial audio system, in spite of their moderate unit price point.

Part of the excitement of being an audiophile is the fun derived from browsing online classifieds.
Within our respective budgets, we can have so much fun examining the various listed equipment
from the laptop on your lap in a lazy Sunday afternoon. So many times I was bent on acquiring yet
another piece of gear, from DACs to loudspeakers, when my wife put a restraining hand on my
shoulder just in time. Sometimes the more research and reading I do, the more I appreciate what I
have. Still, the classifieds gave me ideas bountiful for further research excursions.
