Audio Video (South Africa)

Arguably one of the least addressed aspects of the audio and video arena is the quality of the AC power. And yet, like room acoustics, the impact of poor-quality AC on component and system performance can be significant. I say can be, because many component manufacturers put a lot of effort into the design of their power supplies, which includes the ability of those power supplies to cope with and get rid of noise and interference.

The potential benefits of what is known as a record clamp, or an LP stabiliser, are widely known. They range from improved tracking and reduced resonance to a lower noise floor, improved resolution and finer imaging. However, I say 'potential' for a reason. The effects of these devices vary greatly, depending on the specific application. Suspended or solid-chassis turntables, different tonearms and cartridges - all of these factors, and more, have an impact on how effective a LP stabiliser can be.

By now, regular readers of AVSA will know that Furutech produces an almost dizzying array of audio products, ranging from speaker cables and interconnects to connectors and various other accessories, including power conditioners, demagnetisers, record platter pucks, and more.

Sometimes, you encounter a piece of audio gear that is so meticulously executed and engineered that it's hard not to anticipate the sonic excellence that such a component surely should be capable of. The Furutech Silver Arrows phono cable is a case in point.

Furutech's cable family has built up something of a reputation for precise performance and quality construction since it was first introduced to this market. The Reference III range, of which we've covered both the speaker cables and the analogue interconnects in recent months, finds itself at the top of the line-up.

Furutech's flagship Reference III cables are of the thick, weighty and slightly unwieldy kind that suggests performance to high-end standards and a price to match. That's not a bad thing: after all, when you are spending lots of hard-earned cash on pieces of wire that are supposed to make your system sound better, you want something that doesn't only sound as good as promised, but also tangibly looks and feels expensive.

As any vinyl fan will know, there's nothing more frustrating than a priceless LP record warped so badly that your turntable's tonearm and cartridge simply won't track it anymore
