The infinitesimal signal coming from a phono cartridge, which is measured in fractions of a millivolt for low-output moving-coil cartridges, is far more susceptible to the harmful effects of noise than more robust line-level signals.

Think of the AG-12 as one of the best tonearm cables within a reasonable budget, and the Silver Arrows are the way to go for on a top-line turntable/tonearm combination. On recent cartridge reviews, the Silver Arrows always extracts the most information from the cartridge.

Som jag beskrev det hela i min recension av spelaren i årets för- sta utgåva av Hifi & Musik, så bygger den nya 6:an i grunden på den ursprungliga 6:an från 90-talets mitt. You couldn't pay me enough to conduct a shoot-out of 12 DIN-to-RCA phono cables. I did it anyway. Why? Because the cables were there, as was the SME 20/12 turntable, returned from its recent photo session for the cov- er of the May Stereophile. The SME's ex- posed DIN jack made switching among the candidates relatively painless.

One of the most overlooked segments of the analog world is the tonearm cable. Many turntables come with a halfway decent cable. Some, such as my Rega P9, have a permanently attached cable that can't be swapped for something else. But if your tonearm has a standard DIN plug or a pair of RCA jacks, here's an upgrade you won't want to miss.

There are opposing views regarding the importance of the phono cable in an analog playback system. Advocates for this unassuming length of wire point out the minute signals coming from a phono cartridge -- measured in fractions of a millivolt for low-output moving-coil cartridges -- and thus the opportunity for all manner of noise to muck things up. Naysayers will also point to those teeny-tiny signals, proclaiming that anything so small doesn't need a specially designed cable for transmission -- and, by the way, cables don't make a difference anyway.
